Military History Photo Friday: The Halle Gate, Brussels, Belgium

Belgium has some 300 castles, and while the focus of last week's trip was on the Western Front of World War One, I did get to see the sole-surviving example of the medieval fortification that once protected Brussels.

The Halle Gate was built between 1357 and 1373 as one of seven gates in the city wall. It eventually became a prison and was thus left standing when the rest of the wall and gates were torn down. Today it hosts the Royal Museum of Art and History

What a wonderful adventure. I always learn something new on your blog. I had no idea Belgium had so many castles.

Very interesting, Sean. The roof and style reminds me of the model of the Louvre in medieval times that we saw in the basement of the current Louvre. I'd love to visit The Halle Gate one day if it's a museum, can never get enough of history.

Hi, visiting from the A-Z list, wondering if you are participating. I love history, have written some myself and reviewed some for youth. Interesting site. Have not been Belgium. Germany and castles, yes!

Sean--I'm like Donna. I didn't know that Belgium had so many castles dotting its landscape.

Your post reminded me of a medieval village in France that is still standing. There is a story/legend/myth that when attacked, they fattened up a pig with the richest food they could find. Then they threw the pig over the wall. The animal "exploded" when it hit the ground, and the enemy was stunned by the expensive, decadent food that filled its stomach. They retreated, thinking 'If their livestock is THAT well-fed, we can just imagine how well-fed the people are...'

It's most likely not true, but it makes for an entertaining tale...

H, Sean. I have a little niece named Halle. I'll have to tell her she has a gate named for her!
